This Super Ford Collector Series is on: "The 1960-63 FALCON RANCHEROS". This 8 1/2" X 11" print is in black, burnt orange, blue, tan, and red on a real nice fine finish white paper. (These particular collector series sheets may exhibit a very slight discoloration around the very edges).
As a result of a $246 million program, Ford celebrated it's 25th anniversary of V8 sales leadership by announcing it's most extensively changed line of passenger cars since 1949.
Ford pulled out all the stops for 1957 with a totally restyled car line.
Snuggled among the twenty different variations of the 1957 Fords was the Ranchero.
Ford advertised it as "More than a car ! More than a truck !
Indeed it was, inspired primarily by the Australian Coupe-Utility, the Ranchero was basically a passenger car commercial spin-off which joined the Courier Sedan Delivery in the 300 model truck line for 1957.
The 1957 Fords were the first since 1908 to utilize two different wheelbase lengths. The Custom, Custom 300, sedan, and station wagon series used the 116" wheelbase. The 118" wheelbase was used on the Fairlanes and the Fairlane 500 sedans, hardtops, and convertibles. The chassis used for the Ranchero was the 116' Ford station wagon which reaped the benefits of stiffer springs,a one piece front stabilizer, and twenty gallon gas tank.
Because the Ranchero was a station wagon spin-off, it used a substantial number of common body components, but featured unique floor and upper back panels, rear window, double wall box liner, tailgate inner panel, and load floor.
Early in 1958 it became obvious that the domestic car market was experiencing a number of major automotive changes.
New car buyers were leaning towards the purchase of smaller economy type cars, and American Motors was filling the bill with it's Rambler American.
Even the ailing Studebaker was feeling some revival with it's increased sales of it's Lark.
Ford, GM, and Chrysler prepared to meet the challenge, and in the Fall of 1959, all three were ready.
Ford introduced the Falcon, GM introduced the Corvair, and Chrysler introduced the Valliant.
The 1960 Falcon was the conservative member of the group in both styling and engineering featuring a standard 90 horsepower 144 cubic inch six cylinder with either a 3 speed standard, or a 2 speed automatic.
Much to GM's surprise a Falcon wagon spin-off made it's appearance at the Chicago Auto Show, the 1960 Falcon Ranchero.
While GM was trying to play catch-up with their version of the Ranchero, the El Camino, Ford was already a step ahead of them again !
This "collector series" provides the year to year changes in the body styling, the standard and optional engine and transmission combinations, trim packages, production figures, and more.
"Certified Economy, Certified Durability, and Certified Reliability", was the way Ford billed it's trucks in the early 1960's, and Ford had displayed it's superior marketing strategy as the Falcon Ranchero helped it take the lead in the compact car field !
